Big Starts Small
Big starts small. Employees are one of the most important stakeholders of the Group. Volkswagen Group China regards “We take on responsibility for the environment and society” as one of the Group Essentials. By launching the #Big Starts Small# employee volunteer program, Volkswagen Group China proposes the concept of “Every little helps”, both engaging and inspiring employees to actively participate in charitable initiatives as part of their daily life, starting with small things in the name of public service for the betterment of society.

In 2024, the Group once again organized over 100 employee volunteers to participate in the “Big Starts Small X V-GARDEN Tree Planting Volunteer Activity”. Together they planted more than 6,000 cornflower seedlings in V-GARDEN, pruned over 50 Chinese scholar trees, crabapples, lilacs, and pine trees, and applied pest-control paint to more than 180 trees.

In 2023, the Group carried out the “Big Starts Small X V-GARDEN Tree Planting Volunteer Activity” which involved over 100 employee volunteers. Through employee volunteer activities, more than 3,000 plants—including trees, shrubs, and flowers—were planted, making a tangible contribution to sustainable community greening and environmental improvement.

In 2022, after the Luding earthquake in Sichuan Province, employee volunteers donated more than 1,300 pieces of supplies to the affected children in Shimian County, one of the hardest-hit areas. These supplies included children's books, stationery, and sports equipment. They also collaborated with China Foundation for Rural Development to donate 600 sets of new "Warm Bags" to provide support and encouragement to children in disaster-stricken areas.

During the same year, Big Starts Small, together with the Green Belt afforestation project, established the "Volkswagen Group China Employee Volunteer Forest" on barren hills in the suburbs of Beijing. By planting over 500 cherry trees, they aimed to improve the ecological conditions of the barren hills and provide support for local livelihood development. Nearly a hundred employee volunteers participated in the conservation work of the forest, contributing to the restoration of the ecological environment.

In 2021, the Big Starts Small project launched its first activity “Shoes for Love”. Employee volunteers painted and donated shoes to nearly 600 children living in Yunnan’s remote mountainous regions, along with greeting cards and winter clothing, as New Year gifts, delivering love and warmth to the children. In December, the project carried out the “Warm Bag” activity. Employee volunteers prepared winter clothing and books for 622 children in remote areas of Qinghai Province, and made blessing cards and sent them to the children, bringing care and warmth during the cold winter. These two volunteer activities attracted the participation of over 1,000 employees and benefited more than 1,200 disadvantaged children.
